Protect Nature: Look But Don’t Touch Starfish

--

A wreath embellished with starfish, sand dollars and sea urchins adorns a stunning turquoise-blue door. I smile, hoping to see starfish in the ocean and remember reading the well-known starfish story parable years ago.

Today, I know why it’s wrong to touch or throw a starfish.

The Starfish Story

In “The Star Thrower”, written by Loren Eiseley, (1969), a writer walking on the beach notices a young boy throwing starfish, one by one, back into the ocean. He asks the boy what he is doing.

“I’m saving these starfish, Sir. When the sun gets high, they will die, unless I throw them back into the water.”

The man chuckled aloud, “Son, there are thousands of starfish and only one of you. What difference can you make?”

The boy picked up a starfish, gently tossed it into the water and, turning to the man, said, “I made a difference to that one!” ¹

The story inspires hope — all it takes is one person to make a difference. One act can connect and inspire others to help others. Collectively, we can make a significant difference when we act…
