Imagine it is one clap given. This says the story is not worth 50 claps (max) and downgrades that story.
UX is straightforward. That’s how backend works. There are variables given to every action taken.

Where there is fire ( hot zones ~ readers flocking) is where the algo directs the next reader.
Either get rid of 50 claps and offer 1 clap. Same value.

Highlights are the same. If I like an article, let me decide. Why does the fact I highlight copy devalue the payout? It’s contradictory.
Get rid of highlights or make the highlight count.

Don’t make it easy is my answer.
Stop claps outside of the page story.
Stop followers or likes in rapid succession.
Instagram blocks this behaviour.
Medium needs to invest in this area.
