You did the right thing by not simply posting a black square.

Your friend needs to educate themselves further as to the intention behind #blackouttuesday.

The intention was to give social media platform forefronts to anti-Black racism messaging – relevant messages spreading awareness and actionable steps that SHOULD have risen to the top of the social media feeds by reserving relevant hashtags for voices that needed be heard.

Instead, they became lost in a literal blackout, mass flooding of black squares that blocked out those most important messages.

We were to respect this day by NOT posting to our accounts, other than using our accounts to reposting relevant anti-Black racism posts that would help spread awareness; to listen and to learn more.
